If you have a family member with Alzheimer’s disease, there is a lot that you can do to help them live an ideal quality of life at home. Aside from getting home care services, such as the ones that we provide at Angels of Care LLC, here are some other things that you can do to help improve their daily life.
Tip #1: Help Them Find Activities That They Can Do
Spend time with them and help them find activities that they can do. Tap into their interests and hobbies. Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease can feel productive and happy when they spend time doing familiar tasks, hobbies, and activities. However, please be mindful and make sure that they can still safely perform the activities that they want. For example, if your grandma used to love baking, stay with them in the kitchen and let them help out. Even if they can no longer handle the oven and keep time, you can still let them help by letting them stir the batter.
Tip #2: Maintain a Consistent Routine and Environment
Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease can easily feel lost and disoriented which is why it is important for you to maintain a consistent routine and environment as much as possible. Changes can be difficult for individuals with Alzheimer’s and they prefer to have a familiar schedule and stay in a familiar environment. Some ways that you can maintain consistency include: Setting meal times at the same time every day, avoiding changes in your furniture arrangements, and more.
Tip #3: Lessen the Sound and Movement Levels At Home
Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease can become easily overwhelmed by noise and crowds, so try to lessen them as much as possible. For instance, while they may want to see their family members (e.g. during the holidays), crowding them too much may fluster them. Instead of organizing big family reunions, we suggest that family members should visit in smaller groups at different times. Also, when you are trying to talk to them, try to do so in a quiet environment away from distracting sounds, such as those produced by televisions and radios. This can help them better concentrate on your conversation.
Help your family member feel safe and calm using the tips mentioned above. Also, please remember that individuals with Alzheimer’s may easily become frustrated or confused, so please always remain patient and understanding.
